Golf Events

Golf Activities Program

An active and balanced tournament program is the result of years of input from the membership and Golf Committee carried out on a weekly, monthly or annual basis by the golf professional staff. The Golf Committee is represented by a cross-section of the members.

Weekly Golf Events

Men’s Days are conducted during the season every Wednesday….featuring either a 9:00 a.m. (followed by lunch) or 1:00 p.m. (proceeded by lunch) shotgun start followed by presentation of awards. A variety of formats of play and different pairings procedures are offered.

Ladies’ Days area conducted during the season every Thursday…..featuring 9:00 a.m. shotgun starts followed by lunch and awards. A variety of formats of play and different pairings procedures are offered.

White Tee Group - Tee times are set aside every Tuesday and Friday for men who are invited to register individually to be included in a small informal group playing from the White Tees.

Blue Tee Group – Tee times are set aside every Tuesday and Friday for men who are invited to register individually to be included in a small informal group playing from the longer Blue Tees.

Saturday Morning Game – Tee times are set aside every Saturday for the working Golfer, to register as an individual or and a group playing from the tees of their choice.

Monthly Golf Events

Men’s Guest Days (from one to three guests per event) are conducted monthly unless a major event is scheduled that particular month. Each event features an afternoon shotgun start with buffet luncheon. Special prizes or Golf Shop credit along with individual gifts are provided. Players whose combination of age and handicap total 90 or more are eligible and encouraged to play from the Green Tees.

Ladies’ Guest Days (from one to three guests per event) are conducted monthly unless a major event is scheduled that particular month. Each event features a morning shotgun start with buffet luncheon. Special prizes or Golf Shop credit along with individual gifts are provided.

Sunday Couples’ Mixers - Offered throughout the season featuring an optional buffet lunch, afternoon shotgun start with cocktails and appetizers following golf. Couples register together and are mixed with another couple by the Golf Shop staff.  Pairings are usually by similar handicaps.

Men’s Annual Golf Events

President’s Cup - Individual men's Stableford event. Men register individually. Participants paired and flighted by handicap index. Winners of each flight play in a 3 hole aggregate score play-off to determine overall winner. Cocktail Party and Cook-Out follows the competition. A Green Tee President’s Cup is offered for those who desire to compete from the Green Tees.

Governor’s Cup – Two man team event conducted over two days (36 hole two-man team competition) - 1 Better Ball of 2 Format of Play. Men register as a team of 2. Participants paired and flighted the first day by handicap index and paired the second day by Better Ball score within their own flight. Winning teams from each flight play in a 3 hole aggregate score play-off to determine overall winner. Cocktail Party and Cook-Out follows the competition. Green Tee Governor’s Cup is offered for those who desire to compete from the Green Tees.

Rhoads Invitational - Is a men’s event conducted over three days in March…..practice round followed by Stag Cocktails & Cook-Out and two days of competition (five 9-hole matches). Field is limited to 60 two-man teams making up 10 flights. Blue and White Tee flights are offered. Activities for the ladies include a golf tournament and one other social get together. The overall winning team is determined by flight winners competing in a “Shoot-Out” followed by a Couples’ Cocktail & Hors d’ oeuvres Party and Awards Presentation (dancing to live music). A Green Tee Rhoads Invitational (new in 2006 is offered for those who desire to compete from the Green Tees.

Men’s Club Championship - Is conducted over two weekends (Championship Flight) and one weekend for all other flights. Anyone who desires to compete for the Championship may attempt to qualify for the Championship Flight (Blue Tees) on the first weekend. The non-qualifiers and all other participants will compete either from the White or Green Tees. Tournament is followed by a “Champion’s Reception”.

Ladies’ Annual Golf Events

Fall Opening Golf Event -This is the official start to the Ladies’ Golf Program for the season…..a fun mixer. Featured is a Continental Breakfast, 18 holes of golf, course contests, team awards followed by an Awards Luncheon.

Ladies’ President’s Cup - Is an individual Stableford tournament. Register individually with pairings and pre-determined flights by handicap index. Awards for both Net and Gross teams.

Ladies’ Member-Member - a 36 hole two-person team event conducted over a Tuesday & Thursday. Register as a team of 2 with pairings by handicap index on Day 1 and by Gross Scores within flights on Day 2. Awards for both Net and Gross teams.

Five-Team Inter-Club Matches (introduced in 2006 - 18 hole team competition - Bent Pine - Orchid Island - John’s Island - Quail Valley - Hawk’s Nest

Nancy Rhoads Member-Guest - Ladies event featuring 36 holes (Ringer Tournament) conducted over a Thursday & Friday (usually in March).

Ladies’ Club Championship - Ladies event featuring a three day Match Play format of play. Tournament is followed by a “Champion’s Reception”.

Red vs. Blue is a fun 18 hole competition between the Red Division and Blue Division (determined by the Golf Shop) and conducted on a Ladies’ Day. Ladies are encouraged to dress in their team colors. All activities followed by lunch.

Rally for The Cure is an 18 hole competition for the purpose of raising funds to fight breast cancer.  Course contests and team prizes followed by lunch.The names of the winners or winning teams in the four major tournaments are placed on permanent individual wall plaques in the foyer of the clubhouse. The final round of the annual Club Championships for the Men, Ladies and Green Tee players are played on the same day. Spectators are encouraged. A traditional “Champions Reception” follows the competition.

All are fun social events with an 18-hole competition. The starting fields are limited to 30 teams of four. Lunch, course contests, team awards, followed by cocktails and dinner. Each guest is presented a gift.

Other Featured Events

Governor’s Golf Outingis an 18 hole competition bringing together current and former members of the Hawk’s Nest Board of Governors. The golf event is designed to encourage continuity through communication and appreciation of each others contribution to the Club.

Neighborhood Golf Events are important happenings at Hawk’s Nest. These small private group events encourage the expression of “being a good friend and neighbor”. All events are scheduled through the Golf Shop.

 

Social Events

The members at Hawk’s Nest value a variety of social activities that offers balance to an already active golf program. Some of these activities are centered around a golf event while others are stand alone social events.

New Member Receptions

New members are introduced at the Fall Scramble Golf Tournament…the opening golf event for each season. In addition, all special events for men, women and couples offer many opportunities for regular and new members to mix and to introduce our newest members.

Christmas Cocktail Party

Usually held the second Tuesday in December, the Christmas Cocktail Party offers the opportunity for our busy members to take a break and to enjoy the company of others during this important time of year. With the encouragement of participants, “sing-a-long” sheets are handed out for a few carols from the holiday season.

The Winter Gala – Dinner & Dance

The Winter Gala is the pillar of social activities at Hawk’s Nest, as is held at Bent Pine Golf Club. Usually scheduled in February, this event attracts over 160 participants. The benefit of this popular event includes the opportunity for members to meet and visit many of our members that are non-golfers.

Prospective Member Receptions

During the process of application for membership, the Membership Committee issues special invitations for those prospective members who are in the final stages of their membership application to meet members of the Board of Governors. This private event is hosted by the Board of Governors of Hawk’s Nest. Members who are likely sponsors of prospective members are encouraged to contact the Chairman of the Membership Committee to begin the process of application.
